Vote #1
Mark Arnott
Standing for strong, considered decision-making in our city
I was honoured to be elected to serve as a City Councillor in 2022 and I am committed to working hard for Palmerston North. I take my role seriously and have a 100% council attendance record to ensure your voice is heard.
I am dedicated to making decisions that consider the needs of our city and consistently vote with ratepayers clearly in mind.
I voted against the 2025/26 Budget, which proposed a 6.6% increase in rates with new borrowing up to $49 million. Simply, the city must learn to live within its means. Relying on increasing debt to keep the wheels turning is not sustainable, and it’s unfair to ratepayers.
Now is the time to refocus on what really matters in our city, infrastructure and services.
For a city with fewer than 100,000 residents it is essential that the council delivers value for money on core services well before any ‘nice-to-have’ projects.
What I stand for:
Prioritise core infrastructure and services like roads, footpaths, water, waste, and safety —over “nice-to-haves”
Fiscal responsibility and sensible decision making to ensure a more sustainable future for Palmerston North
Limiting rate rises
Deferring non-essential projects
Strong stance against borrowing to fund day-to-day operations
Opposed the Featherston Street roading changes
(I’m Pro common sense, not anti-cyclist!)
I have fought to reduce rates, opposed what I believe are unnecessary projects, and stood firm against the growing tide of unsustainable borrowing.
It is clear to me that we need to focus on keeping our city running efficiently and effectively, without burdening ratepayers today and in the future. Making Palmerston North a place where responsible spending is aligned with common sense means prioritizing essential services, maintaining fiscal discipline, limiting rate rises and ensuring that every dollar spent brings real value to our community.
This approach safeguards our city’s financial health and promotes a sustainable future for all residents without burdening ratepayers today and in the future.
